Wild mushrooms—among the “Top Ten Healthy Foods”
Traditional Chinese medicine holds that consuming mushrooms in moderation can help strengthen the body and promote recovery from illness. Ancient Chinese medical texts point out that mushrooms such as Reishi and Poria cocos can moisturize the skin, enhance facial radiance, and improve overall appearance. Tremella, on the other hand, is known for its ability to fortify the body, nourish the brain, invigorate the spirit, and beautify the skin. Modern medical research also confirms that there is ample scientific evidence supporting the beauty-enhancing effects of mushrooms. Moreover, mushroom-based dishes have a long history in China; they can be prepared with meat or vegetables, are light yet flavorful, rich yet not greasy, and are widely regarded as "delicacies from the mountains." Among the hundreds of mushroom species available, Boletus edulis possesses properties such as clearing heat, relieving irritability, dispelling wind-cold, relaxing tendons, and promoting blood circulation. It is also an excellent remedy for gynecological ailments and has anti-cold effects. The prized Pholiota nameko boosts the body's immune system, nourishes the blood, moistens dryness, and strengthens the spleen and stomach. Dried Polyporus umbellatus is rich in various amino acids and proteins, making it highly nutritious. The Amanita caesarea, with its bright green cap, helps clear the eyes, reduce internal heat, dissipate excess heat, and relieve respiratory discomfort. Thanks to their high protein content and low fat levels, coupled with numerous health benefits, edible mushrooms have become an ideal health food for people suffering from arteriosclerosis and cardiovascular diseases, and are even hailed as one of the "Top Ten Health Foods" in today's world. Currently, Yunnan ranks first in China in terms of foreign exchange earnings from the export of wild mushrooms. Last year, Yunnan exported 7,744 tons of edible mushrooms, generating foreign exchange earnings of 84.37 million U.S. dollars. Over 90% of these exports were wild edible mushrooms, accounting for 70% of the nation's total mushroom exports. Yunnan’s exports of wild edible mushrooms now lead the country in foreign exchange earnings. Domestic biological experts believe that Yunnan enjoys uniquely favorable natural conditions for developing edible mushrooms, making it one of the most suitable regions in the world for cultivating wild edible mushrooms and boasting the richest resources. With intensified scientific conservation efforts, the time is ripe for large-scale, orderly harvesting of this precious resource. Of the roughly 2,000 wild mushroom species currently identified worldwide as edible, China accounts for 938, with Yunnan alone hosting over 800 species. The natural reserves of wild edible mushrooms in Yunnan exceed 500,000 tons. Today, wild edible mushrooms from Yunnan have become the agricultural product—excluding tobacco—that generates the highest foreign exchange earnings from exports, with products sold to more than 40 countries and regions around the world.
