“One mountain has four seasons, and ten miles bring different skies,” highlighting Yunnan’s unique mountainous landscapes and climatic characteristics that set it apart from other provinces and regions.
Yunnan is renowned as the “Animal Kingdom,” the “Plant Kingdom,” the “Treasury of Medicinal Herbs,” the “Natural Garden,” and the “Hometown of Spices.”
Wild mushrooms naturally grow extensively throughout our province, especially in the central and northwest regions of Yunnan. These areas boast a rich variety and abundance of wild mushroom species. Among them, matsutake, chicken oil mushroom, bolete, dried beef mushroom, and fragrant mushroom are particularly renowned. In earlier years, these mushrooms gained international fame and have been steadily entering the global market in large quantities, earning widespread acclaim from consumers both at home and abroad.
Yunnan produces nearly 5,000 tons of wild mushrooms annually and exports nearly 3,000 tons of various mushroom species—including matsutake, pleurotus ostreatus, morel, boletus, tricholoma matsutake, and phallus impudicus—to countries such as Japan, Southeast Asia, and Europe and the United States each year, generating nearly 120 million U.S. dollars in foreign exchange earnings annually.
